During the 10 days 'Kuntschouw' exposition Michael van Kekem and I spent our time at this place. Not the most ideal place for an illustrator to have an exposition. No white walls, good lightning and it got a little wettish. But it was the best we could make out of it. This was the 3rd time I joined the Kuntschouw, and most defently the last time. Just not my target group of people and ideal place to have an exposition. But it was fun tho. Sold some bags, zines, a tshirt and one etch.

Currently working on two different 'Little Red Riding Hood' books. One will hopefully be finished (printed, fully bound etc) on tuesday. This one above takes up a lot more time and patience. I'm sewing every single imagine on textil as a new experiment :) And so far, I really like to bring up my illustrations to a new level.

This week will be my last week at Escola Massana. Sadly but true. So I try to finish every single assigment I've got during these 3 months. On tuesday I'll have an interview with my two teachers Pep and Arnal, and then I would like to present them my Billy the Kid - book, one Little Red Riding Hood - book and also my flip book from my animatoin a little while ago... So.. Lot's to finish up today. And I've not even been talking about the two animations that have to be finished on tuesday as well (720 drawings. HELLOOOO?) ... And it's already 5 o'clock. What happened to my extra hour?

Assignment: Make a black/white photocollage. Once the photocollage is finished we put this on a sink plate with different types of chemicals. Next week we will be able to make prints out of it.

Wednesday is by far out my favorite day of the week. I love love love this class, and every week I get home with a satisfied feeling of producing tons of new work. And I love every single image, produced :) This week I worked on this photocollage and continued working on my 'yo' project. Next week I will make some new prints, and upload them. Yay!

Atelier Herenplaats Rotterdam

I joined a contest named: RE-ACT a little while ago, by Atelier Heerenplaats at Rotterdam. Now my work got selected together with 19 other young 'artists'!!! My work will be shown at this exposition from february 20th till April 4th. During 'museumnacht' on march 7th they will announce the winners of this contest.

The visitors/audience of the galery get to bring out a vote for the winner. So you know what you gotta do now :) There is a pretty big amount of money to win... (€500,- first price, €250,- second price & €150,- 3rd price). I haven't decided yet if I will fly back home to be there during museumnacht. I'll figure this out later on if it's worth the money.

Interactive Website - Hyves

Assignment: Create a character for an interactive website, that has to be informative for young people between the age of 12 and 16 years old. The website has to be informative about a 'difficult' subject to talk about. The people between 12 and 16 years old have to be able to idendify themself with the character.

As you might understand a lot of people in my class choose to work with some kind of drugs. But I choose a total different subject. As you all might know, internet is a popular medium for all of us. Not just to e-mail, look up information, but also for our 'social contacts'. Hyves.nl, is just another profile-website like myspace.com, facebook.com, cu2.nl etc. I choose to work with hyves.nl because it's currently a really popular profile-site in the Netherlands. Like at any other profile-website you have to fill out a 'profile', and you can choose to upload your picture (avator). Everybody does it! So what's the danger?

Not a lot of people realise that putting information on the internet can be dangerous. 'Dangerous' in the meaning that this information will be out there (on the internet) for ever. So everybody will be able to look up your information, stuff you wrote, pictures you put on, etc. Later on when you grow older and for example you try to "google" yourself. You may find really private information, pictures, or other information that wasn't meant to share with the entire world. When you grow even older, and you're going to apply for a job. Your employer just goes on the internet, and looks up whatever information is there to read/see about you. You do not want your future employer to see emberassing pictures/stuff you wrote etc, when you were younger...! As you might understand, this is a really common subject. Goverments even make laws, about all the information put on the internet. Your private information is not safe out there.

The younger you are, the better to start realising this at a young age. That's why I kind of 'redesigned' hyves.nl. When you decide to make an account, the first thing you have to do is fill out your profile. You choose a picture etc. Everytime you put 'too much' information on the internet, you might get a popup with warnings. Warnings like: "Do you realise everybody on the internet can read this?". And because especially young people might not get impressed with this, I also put warning-popups up like "Do you realise your teacher/neighbour/mom can see this picture/information?". etc. As soon as you choose your picture and fill out your profile, the computer gives you a character that will look identically like you. You'll always get to see this character on the left of your screen, while being on hyves.nl. In the Netherlands we have this saying 'Jezelf bloot geven', meaning: 'When you give away too much information about yourself, you're getting naked the more information you give away'. With this saying I decided to make an animation of a 14 year old boy (the character), undressing himself. Imagine him being all dressed up, on the left side of your screen. Everytime you put too much information on the internet, you take off one piece of clothing.... etc. Because be honest... Who wants to be naked on the internet? Nobody!

A total new country for me, with tons of new things to discover...

This semester I'm taking an Animation course. So far I didn't really start working on my own animation yet, since first of all I've to learn how to use all the difficult programs and learn about all the variety of animation-techniques. Right now we're working with a wacom in TV Paint Animation Pro. We'll get AfterEffects after this.

My concept for my animation is quite the same concept as my first animation was, during first year, called 'The Travel Journal'. I'm already excited for the result.

This semester we're working in a group of 6 people on a magazine. We've chosen the subject: doodles. In every class we're working on a different part for in the magazine. For example: An interview (portrait), an article, a report, some adds, the front and the back. In the end we'll decide who's part will be good enough for in the magazine. So we all work on the same pages basically. In the end we do have to print about 50 silk-screened versions of our magazine. So all our illustrations will be in two colors only. Probably black-white..
&More: The name of our magazine is: 16 Minutes of fame, since our magazine is 16 pages long. Our magazine is meant for unsung arts. And this one will be about doodles. The magazine is meant for people (students) who're interested in this subject, but also people that didn't know about this subject before. Because we want to show them what doodle-art is.

And this is that moment where I post for the first time since I started my second year of art school, where I"m gonna tell you all about my new assignments... Well... There is this photography class, where we have to make cards, based on the theme 'invisible borders'. Every week we make a new card, with a new word, based on that theme. And then there is a class about typography (see the image above this text), and an illustration class, where we draw models. And one actual illustration class where I"m stuck with the subject: picking your nose. Each week we try out new styles, materials, etc! I'll continue showing off my work I work on in school on this blog. And then there is an other blog coming, with free work. But you got to be a little patient about that one :)

Short Update

I passed all my classes in school, and got accepted to the second year of illustration! Which I'm really looking forward to. I hope I'll learn a lot about all the styles ans possibilities of what illustration has to offer me.
I'm moving out pretty soon. I got a room in Breda now, near by my school. I'll start painting/decorating my room really soon, but I didn't have time yet...
Because I made a Eurotrip and I had a 8 days during exposition in Zeeland together with two of my friends from school. I think it was a really nice and good experience, because we all learned a LOT about it. They asked us to come back next year, so I already started making plans for that.
I've been drawing a lot in my journal this summer during my trips. Next week I'll fly out to Chicago again, and hope to do a lot more drawing. I might scan some later, and drop them on my blog, if they are worth it.
I really have to start working on my own website, but I don't know where/how/when to start :s
Ohhh I also made it to the finals of the freshcotton.tshirt desing contest! Out of 567 tshirts desings I made it to the last 25. Next sunday (the 29th of july, see streetlab.nl) they will announce who won the internship or other prices at the streetlab festival in Amsterdam. I'm really looking forward. Just because I had never join a design contest before, so I think it's kind of a big deal :)

7 weeks we've been working on our end-projects now. There is one more weekend left to finish our projects, before grading. The assignment for this last period was based on our majors for the upcoming 3 years: illustration, to me. We had to pick out at story by Franz Kafka, a German writer from the 20th-century. I choose a story about a vulture. The image above is one of my 1000 sketches. Right now I'm working on a big book, made on cardboard, with about 10 illustrations. Which I'll present to my teachers next week. And when I find the time, I'll update pictures to my blogspot. Bye for now...

The first week the assignment for this class was: Make a drawing of each day with an element (happening-emotion etc) that tells about your day. Out of these 7 drawnings we picked out one we keeped continue working on for the rest of this semester. Our homework included a lot of drawing, making pictures, look for images, experiment with different types of undergrounds-paper-paint-colour-positions, cut&paste etc. etc. I liked this class the best, cuz I could work on this for ever and ever. My subject was about a girl that is strugglin' with herself. Think about problems a teenager girl (could) have. Parents, school, friends, food, etc.
During class we had models we had to draw, which was a great practise to do.
I do not really have a final-image to show you, but enough concept-sketches to share :)

The assignment in this class was to pick out a random movie from a tv-guide, you didnt see before. With the information we got about this movie (what's about 3 to 4 lines) we had to create our own film stills. I choose the movie: 'Science of Sleep'. The main theme of this movie is that there is this person that doesnt see any difference between reality and imagination. My idea was to make 3d-collages. Every collage should explain one scene out of the movie I created. I sketched a lot of scenes I could work out, but I finally could only work out 3 collages, because of the time.

Minor Illustration

In this class we could choose out of a selection of short stories. I choose the following story (in dutch). Our homework was to create 3 illustrations that would fit in the text. Every week we had to make sketches, and experiment with different material etc. I created my final 3 illustrations in Illustrator, what is a lot more work then I thought it was gonna be. But they turned out fine, for my first illustrator-images I think. And so did my teacher as well.

"De rest van mijn leven zal ik aan die hamburger blijven denken. Ik zie mezelf dan aan een toonbank zitten en heb er een in mijn hand terwijl de tranen langs mijn wangen stromen. De serveerster kijkt de andere kant op omdag ze er niet tegen kan kinderen te zien huilen als ze een hamburger eten, en ze wil me ook niet in verlegenheid brengen.

During class we had to make images with three objects: A house, a tree and a cloud. To put these three objects in different sizes/positions in a square, it would make a different story every time. After making about 50-80 of them, we had to thoose out 3 of them, that would tell a short story. These are the three I selected out of my house-tree-cloud-images.

This is what you get when you give me thursdays of from school, and there's a snow blizzard outside... I've been practising with Illustrator all day. I finally found/made time to do that! Exciting!! In June I'll have my first exposition together with two friends of mine, Joop & Tijl. It will be in Westelijk Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland from June 16th till June 24th.
